Data science is a new and developing interdisciplinary field, which involves using scientific methods, algorithms, processes, and systems to extract insights and knowledge from structured and unstructured data. it combines aspects of statistics, computer science, and discipline-specific knowledge to analyze and interpret complex data sets. The goal of data science is to make informed decisions, predictions, and optimizations based on the insights gained from the data.

An an academic discipline, programs in Data Science exist predominantly at the graduate level. In recent years, more programs are being started at the undergraduate level. university of Wyoming School of Computing is developing a Data Science, BS degree, expected to launch Fall, 2025. There are now several community college Data Science programs across the country, and a national push to introduce data science courses within programs at the introductory level.

The EWC Data Science Certificate is designed to introduce students to key data science concepts, tools, and techniques. The goal for the certificate is to give students these basic skills necessary to apply data science tools in the workplace. The certificate is also a first opportunity to introduce students to this field and provide a potential pipeline for students to transfer to the University of Wyoming.
